Drum Corps Index

Music in Motion - Clearwater, Florida

Appetizer for the Final Week, that was the reason to invite 13 Division III and II Corps to Clearwater. All Corps were there, only Coachmen were not there. They had to quit the last part of their Tour. I have heared Money was the Reason. So Dimension started the night then Allegiance Elite from Kanada and the Phantom Regiment Cadets. After the cadets it a big thunderstorm came up and the organizator stopped the show. The Organisator announced that the show will go on as a standstill-show in a hall of the Clearwater Highschool. We couldn’t wait till then, because we were completly wet and cold. Here are two pictures of Dimension and PR Cadets.

Let’s hope that the next week will be better.

Monday

Prelims Division III

It started right in time at 9.00 a.m. The Summer Music Games 1996 in Orlando Florida. Without any pomp the Jury of today was presented and then the first Corps Kips Bay Boys + Girls had the job to be the first Corps in competition whitch has to play in front of nearly empty seats. Only parents of DC Kids and the Judges were there.

But there were some Highlights in my opinion in the early hours. Not alway judged by the jury with high scores, but not the private taste is key to the points. If the heardblad has to deside, there would be no corps with a score belowe 100 (the max. Score). The competition roles on corps by corps, until, well a thunderstorm came up and interrupted the competition.

But the timetable was nearly untutched so that the Division II corps could start right in time at around 6.30 p.m. The Prelims should be finished on Monday, other with Division III where the kids will know tomorrow after the second part who has to go home and who has the chance to compete for the titel. First place in Div. II got Pionner with a score of 94.1. With nominal 120 members on the field they are normally Div. I or Div. II. I haven’t counted the members on the field. That is others job. Secound was Les Étoiles with a score of 93.9. Third was Nite Express with a really dynamic Show. NEX shows this year Impressions from „The First Knight“. It was really hot, but I think they have only litte chance against Pionner and Les Étoiles. Do they catch the chances. We will see??

Tuesday

Mandarines und Les Étoiles Championes der Division III und II

Right in Time the God in Heaven closed his rivers and it stopped raining. So the Div. III and II Finals could take on - a small taste of what we will get on Suaturday night at Div. I finals. Bayonne Raiders started the competition followed by Northern Aurora, East Coast Jazz and the Patriots. All were really good, but at the end nothing will have changed from the ranking the day before. Blue Star is third, Golden Lancers are secound and Mandarines won the DCI Championchip Div. III Titel. With a total score of 94.0 und the best in High Brass, High Visual and High Percussions Mandarines an a class of its own. Not only because of the Koto feature part. They have won the titel without any discussions!

In Devi. II is was a head to head race between Nite Express, Les Étoiles and Pioneer. Pioneer had the best scores at Prelims, but at finals Les Étoiles boost their show a little an won the DCI Div. II titel with a score of 95.5. They also won best Colorguard and High Brass. High Visual they had to chare with Pionner who won High Percussions. So the titel this year goes out of the States to Kanada!

At 23.30 the show was over and the corps has again 1 year time to build up a show. See all again in 97 same place same time.

P.S.: The Top 3 of Div III and II compete again in Div. I Quarterfinals. So I have the chance to see NEX, Pionner and the rest again on Thursday.

Here are as yesterday the pictures of the Corps! Watch out!!!!!!

Wednesday

Parade Day and Individual and Ensemble Competition

Wednesday, half the week is gone, half the week will come. The DCI Champion 96 in Dev. II and III are fixed. Now it’s Division I job to find their champion. Phantom Regiment, Blue Devils, Cadets or Cavaliers - who will become the champ? On Saturday night we will know. Today there was only one competition. Individual and Ensemble Championchip. Or has it been a Cavaliers' rehearsal? Most of the Individual and Ensemble Champs were from the Cavis.Maybe a sign for the titel? The Blue Devils from Concord California started their standstill show with Colorguard at the Epcot Center at 5.30 p.m. Oh, it slipped my mind, an also Californian corps performed at Magic Kingdom, but at 10 o’clock in the morning! Did they have any spectators so early in the morning? Yes, they had. There are fans of Velvet Knights, the performer, all over the world. VK blew and drummed and the fans came, but many of them were to late, because nobody knew where and when they would perform. The Blue Devils performed at a better time. At 7.00 Entertaining and Drum Corps of the Cadets of Bergen County gave us hell. They started the evening at the American Area at Epcot Center. After the Cadets, all Individual and Ensemble Champions performed their work. After that the Future Corps did series and complete songs just in highjobs. The big bang end was reserved for the Madison Scouts. They "only performed" their standard show, but that was more than enough. "Bolero" was for the fans. "Malaguena", an oldie of DC Music, sounded more refreshing and better than the years before. Tomorrow we will know a bit more about starting of the Div. I quarter finals.

Hoping that you enjoy my small service,

Oliver

Thursday

 1. Blue Devils 98.3

Wooowww, what at Show. Dynamic compared with high performances in Brass, Percussions und Colorguard. The Gangsters are on their way. And in my opinion there will be no other co(r)ps whitch will beat them. Terrific arrangement. The Blues of Gangster goes to the heart.

2.Cadets of Bergen County 97.2

The American West in the best way of the East Coast Heat. Cadets. Hot and entertaining. Cool brass and terrific percussions breaks. If they improve a little they may be good for the titel expect BD isn’t there. Just a joke. In my opinion the titel will be given to one of both corps BD or Cadets. Today BD was in front. 0.9 Point is a lot, but not a free ticket for the titel.

3. Cavaliers 95.5

Cavis are Pan American, with terrific arrangemens from Copland the music of this years show is really impressing. But it will be not enough for the titel, but we will see. The Kids will give their best. On Saturday we will know more.

4. Phantom Regiment 94.6

Mind the Dark! Shostakovich is coming. PR presents this year his show Defaint Heart from Dmitri Shostakovich. Classic from its best. From on of the Corps in the World. We will see tomorrow if they can improve their position. But 3.7 points from BD that is a lot.

5. Madison Scouts

Spain in Madison! The hearts were melting. This show is real entertainment for the crowd. They loved the songs. A Mis Abuelos is a terrific opener (2 European corps will use this song in their this year show to Jubal and Starriders) and Bolero a special warm-up, ups! A real warm song with high-voltage at the end. After En Fuego the Scouts perform Malaguena. A real classical! Dynamically it’s difficult to beat and for the crowd it’s a thunderball! Small mistakes and incorrectness „just“ gave them the 5. place. Hope they improve it’s a terrific show.
