After nearly 6 years with no real Drum Corps Contest in Germany, the Show is back!!!!

For the first time on Saturday September 14th a Drum Corps Contest took place in Germany, oranized by an foreign organisation; Drum Corps Holland. After Drum Corps Deutschland quit his work the German Champion Starriders Drum & Bugles Corps from Bad Münder started to compete in Holland. In 1994 Starriders earned their success for their effort. They won the Class-A Titel! This year two other Corps started to compete in DCH, too. Schlossgarde and Woelper Loewen have their HQ in Germany. For that reason DCH decided to organize an Contest in Germany. A historical stadion was found very soon. The Weserberglandstadion in Hameln, only a few miles away from Bad Muender. The same stadion where in 1989 Madison Scouts performed their Show.

The corps had to warm-up in a light sizzling rain. Jubal started early the day to practice, around 2.p.m. A little bit to late Beatrix arrived around 6.30 p.m. at the stadium.

At 7 p.m. the show began. In the new established Corps Style Class (everything witch make a Drum Corps styled music) the Blue Lions and the Skydogs should compete against another. But Skydogs were not able to perform, because of illness.

The Blue Lions were champion, before the entered the field. Blue Lions seem to be in a hurry. They didn’t wait until the judges were ready to start with their show. Nervousness or nor knowing the rules, who knows? Their show this year centains well known stuff more like a Marching Band: "Sing, Sing, Sing", "Copacabana", "Jack the Nife", "Sister Act" and Yovanotti. Some songs are from last year and some are new. The show was done really we, but in a lot parts not really clean. I hope that more Corps like the Blue Lions (and we have some of them here in Germany) will go next year to the Corps Style Class. That is the only way to give the oportunity to have enough corps to make a complete DC contest-evening.

After the Blue Lions Schlossgarde from Frankfurt/ Hoechst entered the field. A few years ago one of the biggest (quantity) Corps in Germany they have to perform today with less musicans. In their anneversary year, with new uniforms the present their show „Jazz Tour ‘96". They perform songs like: "Ain't got that swing", „Sing Sing Sing", „I can do this, I can do that" and „Autumn leaves". After a year of Musical-songs Schlossgarde goes back to their favorite music style: Jazz. The drill was really good, fast movements and a cool choreography, but the music wasn’t the same. In some parts parts the music was simply unclean, in other percussion and brass didn’t fit together. There are nearly 2 weeks to improve the music the potential for a good show is there.

Joint Adventure the first corps from Holland this eventing presented this year with his show „Miss Saigon" songs from the same-named musical. With no bass-pressure (no bass-drums) a lot of sound-rage is missing. The show, exspecially the dieing scene was magnificant!

The secound place this evening made the Woelper Loewen from Neustadt am Ruebenberge. The Woelper Loewen are one of the most continuing corps in Germany. "Now I'm here", Good old fashioned lover boy", "Save me" and "Touch the sun" are their show this year, but show isn’t really conviencing! To much huddle and to much uncleanness! I had the opinion that after 2/3 of the show the brass lost his complete breath. Nethertheless a good 2nd place and again, we have 2 weeks to the finals.

Saturdays A-Class-Champion, with a big break to the Woelper Loewen, was Premier. The really small Corps performed very clean and very well. Everything fits and went well. 6.9 points to the secound is a lot, but there has been Championchips where the 4. Went to 1. Place from Semi- to Finals (Phantom Regiment).

Next part of the Show was the Open-Class. Four Corps are competing here. Blue Spirit, Starriders, Beatrix and Jubal. Blue Spirit started with their Show „Classic Rock ‘96". The show was performed with a lot of drive, but also with some problems in all sections. They made the unlucky 4. Place.

In third place Starriders finished their home-contest. Their show works straight on to their last year show. Latain-rhythems of it’s best. „A mis Abuelos" as opener were for european conditions Mega-Cool. O.K. Madison Scouts made with their version more power, but it’s not fair to compare a corps of 128 members with a corps of 40. But what would have been if....!!! We will see. In my opinion on of the emotionalst songs this evening. It goes on with „Kenja", „Razooli" and Guagoanco. There is a big potential for more, but they need the next two weeks go get the last polishing of their show. Next week is their „Death Camp" and that will bring (as in the last years) the push! Without these last small problems the Show is „really HOT".

After Starriders the field got more crowded. Beatrix the actual DCH-Champion entered the field. In their jubilee-year the turned back history. Older Songs, with made Beatrix to that what they are today, one or maybe better the best Corps in Europe, were arranged new and presented in modern drill-design. "Breaking up is hard to do", The worn down piano", "Send in the Clowns" and Don't rain on my parade" are well known not only for Beatrix-Nuts!

The last corps this evening was Jubal. They also perform new arranged older songs. "Granada", La Suerto los Tontos", "A mis Abuelos", "Echano" are "Malaguena" contained to their show this year! To summaries the show with two words: „Boooorrr Eyyyyy" (Germany expression for REEEEAAAAALLLYYYYY HHHOOOOOT") In some parts of the songs I had the feeling that „Small Madison Scouts" are on the field. Musik, Show and presentation were top. The Matador Hans Kloppert (Drum Major) had his problem to keep the bulls (musicans) calm. This corps is really burning. Jubal performed their show with a turbo-booster! The fans and the jury said thank you. First with standing-ovations and secound with the first place! The diference to Beatrix is with only 1.3points really small, but I think (and hope) that Jubal will made his titel. We will see! In two weeks we know more!

After all you just can congratulate Ingo Erdmann and his team, witch brought such an impressing Contest to Germany. Thank you!

THE SHOW IS BACK!!!
